What do the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 911R have in common? They were all worth more than a million above MSRP as soon as they left the showroom.
The exact math behind the million dollar price tag of the 991R is still unclear, but the 911R was on eBay with the 'buy it now' option at $1.25 million. Our colleagues at Motoring Research spoke to 'supercar finance experts' and Porsche dealerships, who both confirmed that the cars would be worth about ! million USD above the $186K price tag. This means the Porsche 991R would be worth more than SIX times MSRP. This means the 991R takes the title from the LaFerrari, that was 'only' valued at MSRP x2 as soon as it came out.
However it must be said that this enormous increase in value most likely isn't because there are that many Porsche enthusiasts, a price like this is probably because of the speculators who love limited edition Porsches. In the same way every limited model is worth more than the sticker price. Dealerships often aren't allowed to ask for a higher price than MSRP, so they ask you to trade in a vehicle in order to become eligible for a high value car. The dealership can sell the car you traded in, and collect a premium off it.
Porsche most likely knows what's happening with the (limited) models like the 918, 991 GT3RS and 991R, which were all valued at more than the MSRP. This could have been a reason for Porsche to start the Porsche VIP program, which gives high profile clients the opportunity to automatically become eligible for the next limited edition vehicle. This program rewards the owners who don't flip their limited edition Porsches, as soon as you flip the cars you're kicked out of the program. This is bad for you because it makes is substantially harder to become eligible for the next limited Porsche.
Predicting the worth of cars is like predicting the stockmarket. It is also often said that --the right-- cars are a better investment than stocks. It is impossible to predict exactly how much more the 991R will be worth. A million seems a bit steep to me, but there are many people who really want a 991R and there are only 991 produced. The reality is that the car has already become a collectors item and that the car is worth more than the sticker price. We'll know exactly how much more as soon as a few (barely?) used ones come available on the second hand market.
