Development of BMW M2 in critical phase

If everything goes according to plan BMW will start the production of the M2 at 'BMW Werk Leipzig' in november this year. Many enthousiasts of fast BMWs have been looking forward to the little rocket that has the ungrateful task to fill the humongous shoes of the car that has become a legend in an incredibly short time. The 1M coupe. From the pics it looks like BMW is busy with laying the last hands to the newest member of the M family.

The M version of the previous 1 serie came at the end of the lifecycle of the first 'Einser'. Originally it wasn't even part of the plan to build a more powerful version above the 130i and the 135i but eventually it was done by the guys at M BmbH, with great results. Even though the BMW M1 wasn't allowed to be named 'M1' and the internal motorcode didn't start with an 'S', like usual with the BMW M models, the car was loved by journalists and customers that were looking for a lighter, more agile M than the M3. Even though the production was originally limited to 2700 they produced 6309 cars between 2010 and 2012 thanks to the high demand. It shows that there is a lot of love for this little car because the second hand models are usually higher priced than the at the time more expensive M3's.

The M2 has a lot to prove as successor of the 1M Coupe. To be prepared BMW is testing the prototypes heavily, like racing on the green hell and sliding in the cold snow of Scandinavia. Now, a couple of moths until production starts they'll start with the ultimate test. Parking in-between the regular cars in a residential area. The M2 with its wide body will meet the Porsche Cayman, Ford Focus and Mazda 3. Luckily it can get support by an older member of the M family. An E46 'Dreier' keeps things in check, in case something goes wrong with the young talent before it gets sent into the world!
