Cooper Climax ready for production

Sometimes you hear about school projects where students have to create a street(legal)car. Usually they come up with the weirdest creations. Most of the time cars like this give us a nice look into the future. Some students from the Coventry University for Auto Design (England) have created a two-seat-sportscar. This car will, performance wise, be similar to the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640.

In the sixties everybody knew the legendary Cooper Climax Formula 1 car. The car built by these students is based on this Cooper Climax. Due to that fact this car is called Climax. It’s a special car, not just due to the fact it has the performance of a 600+ hp supercar. Besides that, this car is also very fuel efficient. If you can change gears fast enough you can reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. You will stop accelerating when you’ve reached 256 km/h. This will be done by a 4 litre boxer engine which produces 270 hp at 6500 rpm. Another interesting fact, the car doesn’t fun on normal petrol, but it uses ethanol. You might think: "What makes ethanol interesting?" It’s possible to hook up your laptop onto the car and change the fuel mixture, this way you will always get the right mixture for optimal performance, for the race track but also if you want to drive around the city.

You’ve probably guessed it already. It’s a very light car. Its weight is 546 kilo which is just a bit more than the Caparo T1, which puts only 500 kilo on the scale. You can’t complain about the power-to-weight ratio, which is an impressive 494 hp per 1000 kg! Just compare this to the power-to-weight ratio of the LP640, "only" 384 hp per 1000 kg.

These figures are all very nice, but we have got some more facts about this little monster. This information is also nice for impressing your mates at a boring birthday party. It has a nice booth. So this car is also suitable to go to the grocery and get your weekly supply of beer. The car you see on the images was just a concept. The students of the university worked 18 months to get to this result. The purpose of this project was to build an environmental friendly sportscar.

After a while a production model of this car has been arrived. Surprisingly the name has not been changed, neither are the looks or specifications of the car. It’s possible to order this car, the production will start in april. The price tag attached to this car will start at 55.000 euros. In Holland you should add the new tax on environmental unfriendly cars and of course all of the other taxes the Dutch government thought were necessary.
