Geneva 2015: Ford GT

After the introduction on the North American market during the NAIAS and the Chicago Auto Show, the spectacular Ford GT is introduced in Europe. This GT is already one of the biggest surprises of 2015 and also one of the highlights of the Geneva Motor Show.

Next year, the production of the Ford GT will start. Luckily Ford already unveiled the car. The show in Geneva might be dominated by European supercars and hypercars, the GT definitely fits in between. There’s a very special reason that Ford introduces the GT this year. Next year is Ford’s 60th anniversary and the GT is still one of the most successful race cars on the 24 hours of Le Mans. A reason for this modern interpretation reflects on the history of Ford. Owners of the first generation and the second generation will be the first in line to get a copy from the new generation.

Just like its predecessor from 2004, the new GT has the DNA from the first generation. With its wide front and the characteristic headlights this is a real GT. The big difference is the level of aerodynamics. Two enormous air intakes start behind the cabin and continue to the back. It looks modern, aggressive and especially very unique. No other manufacturer showed a similar design before. According to Ford this all has to do with the aerodynamics. The teardrop shape is very efficient and results in a low drag. Next to that, this shape improves the cooling of the components. We still see the famous taillights and the central exhaust like we used to know.

The car is powered by a new 3.5 liter twinturbo EcoBoost engine. Not an eight but a six cylinder engine proved the GT with over 600 hp. Ford says goodbye to the enormous V8 because it’s not efficient enough anymore. A seven speed gearbox with a double clutch transfers the power to the rear wheels. Ford doesn’t talk about performance and the weight yet but with the use of carbon fiber and aluminum the GT will have one of the best power to weight ratios.

Next year Ford will prepare us for the special moment in 2016 when the GT can be found on the streets. We’re really looking forward to this moment.
