Sports stars and their cars

Young boys instinctively KNOW that when they grow up they want to own one; girls want to hang on the arm of the owner of one of these, while some girls actually want, and DO, own one of these. Yes, we’re referring to cars: Wonderful, expensive cars to make everyone’s heads turn. Many sports stars earn so much money that they can literally pick and choose when it comes to the cars they own. Just like we follow their every move on the court, the track or the pitch, we also love reading about what they drive.

TENNIS ANYONE?

As fast as he moves around the court, the greatest tennis player of all time Roger Federer is not averse to some speed when given the opportunity to take a Mercedes-Benz around a race track. More importantly, he has been a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz since 2010 and there is no doubt he was chosen because of his high profile as an athlete.
Some of these stars, and that includes Federer, own many luxury vehicles. In 2014 for instance, Federer was awarded another Mercedes-Benz when he was crowned the champion at the Shanghai Masters Series. On this occasion he walked away (in addition to the prize money) with an E-Class Cabriolet to add to his collection. As part of his collaboration with MB, Roger receives a new Benz every 6 months.

Andy Murray is another tennis star who is not shy about spending his cash on luxury cars. In June 2013 Andy was the owner of at least 2 luxury models: an Aston Martin and a Jaguar. He sold the bright red Ferrari F430 that he previously owned. If that’s not enough, add to Andy’s wonderful collection his Porsche Cayenne and the first car that he ever owned, a VW Polo. His latest addition is the BMW i8 hybrid, which formed part of his prize when he took the BMW Open title in Munich in May 2015.

When she’s not hitting her opposition off the court or greeting her fans in public, gorgeous Maria Sharapova loves going for a drive in her Porsche. As a global ambassador for the brand, Maria is the proud owner of a Porsche Targa 4s, which she won during one of her outings on the court. In April 2013 she became the owner of yet another Porsche, the 911 Carrera 4S convertible, after winning the Stuttgart Grand Prix. In addition to being paid as a brand ambassador, Maria had the opportunity to drive the latest two-seater Porsche Boxster Spyder weeks before it was available on the market. A 5 times Grand Slam Champion Maria certainly has Porsche at her feet!

PLAYING YOUR CARDS RIGHT

When you have money, when you have reached the top and you enjoy driving your dream car, you simply buy it, or the sponsors pay you to advertise for them like we’ve seen in the case of the tennis players. Professional poker’s top earner and one of the greatest players to have ever lived, Daniel Negreanu certainly can choose what he enjoys driving. Daniel’s choice is a red Tesla, which he was very happy to tell all his fans and followers about on Twitter and Instagram when he acquired the beautiful red car.

THE FOOTBALLERS
Some cars are fast and ultra-pricey, but if you earn the kind of money that so many of the world’s top footballers take home, then you simply choose what you like; paying for it is never an issue. That little detail looks after itself.

When your name is Wayne Rooney, an all-time great having played for Manchester United and England, then arriving at the pitch in a classy Aston Martin Vanquish seems totally normal. You may not be James Bond, but you’re entitled to the same luxury vehicle that Britain’s top spy drives. If you like it, money is not the issue: You go out, buy it and enjoy driving it. It does not stop there for Rooney. When he feels less ‘formal’, his other vehicle of choice is the Range Rover Sport. It seems that he shares this preference with other famous footballers such as Luis Suarez, Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be the richest of all the football players, and his car collection must rank as one of the best among sports stars. If his Bugatti Veyron and Koenigsegg CCX are not good enough to impress everyone, how about his Aston Martin, Bentley, Porsche or Mercedes? Or maybe the Lamborghini Aventador? Add to that his Maserati GranCabrio. Pretty impressive. But when you’re Ronaldo, only the best is good enough.

THE NBA STARS
The biggest stars of one of America’s major sports associations are not shy to spend their dollars on luxury cars, and if you earn major bucks, why not?

Look at what Kobe Bryant keeps in his garage: a Range Rover SUV for those more ‘informal’ drives when wife and daughters join dad, a Ferrari F430, a Bentley Continental coupe, an Azure Mulliner convertible and a Cadillac Escalade to round the collection off. Of course, the details may change at any moment if Mr Bryant decides to buy another luxury vehicle.

Another huge NBA star is LeBron James. The owner of his own impressive mini-fleet, LeBron has a choice when he wakes up in the morning: Ferrari F430 (compare Kobe Bryant), Jeep Wrangler, Camaro, Porsche and Dodge Challenger; a wonderful selection to make a successful man feel good about his hard work and dedication.

MARK OF SUCCESS
It is an undeniable fact that so often the car maketh the man (or woman these days), especially in the highly competitive arena of sports where the stakes are high: huge salaries and endorsements, let alone the fame and celebrity status enjoyed by the individuals. What better way to spoil yourself than by buying a luxury car, or two, or three...
