Automotive history spotted: Bugatti EB112

The period before Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. was part of Volkswagen wasn’t the most glamorous part of the company’s history. Of course there was the EB110, but the car wasn’t far as successfull as the company assumed. Another project Bugatti developed in the early 90’s was the EB112, a car which never made it to the production era. Despite all that one copy drives around the streets, the copy which was spotted in Monaco.

Lets take a jump into history, back to 1993. This was the year the Bugatti EB112 stood shining on the show of Geneva. The car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who designed cars like the BMW M1 and the Lancia Delta Integrale before that. The EB112 should be a second model in the Bugatti-range. The idea behind the model was founded by the rich Italian businessman Romano Artiolo who owned the rights of Bugatti since 1987. He dreamed of his own-designed car. This resulted in the EB110 which was introduced on the 110th birthday of Bugatti, back in 1991.

Two years later another model came up with the aim to make Bugatti grow, it was the prototype of the EB112. The design was an elegant saloon-car with a very characteristic tail which is a direct reference to the 57SC Atlantic from 1938. Under the bonnet we can find a 6-liter V12 with a power of 460 bhp, which was good enough for a topspeed of 300 kph. The car is very striking and smaller than the new limousine of Bugatti was going to be, 5,07 meters. Now in 2013, we still can name a car which let us think of this particular prototype, it’s the Porsche Panamera. This car has got the same coupe-like look and those typical back doors.
