The story of the BMW Speedtop actually begins in 2024, one year before its official unveiling and two years before it was first spotted on the road. At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como, where we were also present, BMW presented the Concept Skytop, an extraordinary two-seater based on the technology of the BMW M8 Competition. The positive reaction to the car led BMW to actually produce the Skytop in a limited run of just 50 examples. At the same time, it laid the foundation for another exclusive project
In 2025, BMW took a different approach with the Speedtop. Instead of an open two-seater, the company created a three-door shooting brake that combines the sporty proportions of a coupé with a long roofline and additional luggage space. Once again, the technical foundation came from the BMW M8 Competition F92. Underneath the newly developed bodywork sits its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 625 hp and 750 Nm of torque, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive
Visually, however, the Speedtop shares very little with an ordinary M8. The distinctive central line begins on the bonnet, runs across the roof and continues all the way to the rear, emphasising the car’s unusually long silhouette. It is joined by the characteristic shark nose, slim headlights and an illuminated BMW kidney grille. The most striking feature is the extended roofline, which flows smoothly into the shooting brake rear. The Floating Sunstone Maroon paintwork further enhances this effect, gradually transitioning from a dark red tone into a lighter silver shade across the roof
Despite its extended body, the Speedtop has only two seats. Instead, the area behind them has been turned into a beautifully finished luggage compartment. BMW worked together with the Italian leather goods manufacturer Schedoni to create specially designed luggage for the car. The interior was also crafted with a great deal of handwork, featuring high-quality leather, Budapest-style perforation and numerous individual details. Even the luggage compartment is fully tailored to the car’s luxurious touring concept
On 23 May 2025, the BMW Concept Speedtop made its world premiere at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Unlike many concept cars, however, this one did not remain just a design study. BMW announced a strictly limited production run of only 70 examples. This made the Speedtop even more exclusive than the Skytop, of which 50 cars were planned. The price was initially not officially announced, although various reports put it at around €500,000
The enormous demand confirmed BMW’s decision. All 70 examples had already been allocated shortly after the unveiling. At the same time, testing of the production cars began, with the first test vehicles spotted on public roads and at the Nürburgring in 2026. Despite the tiny production run, the Speedtop is therefore being developed and tested like a fully fledged production car
And yesterday, it was finally spotted for the very first time, with surprisingly little camouflage. The car was seen at the Nürburgring, where it appears to still have some testing to complete
