First February weekend of 2020 held the second year of the GP Ice race in Zell am See in Austria. Following last year’s event’s success, the ice track made on the local airport was packed with thousands of visitors and some of the coolest and most valuable modern and classic cars. The event pays homage to the original ice races held in Zell am See in 1950s.
The unique concept of a modern ice race was made even more special with the variety of cars that attended. From vintage rally cars like Lancia Stratos, E30 M3 and 911 Rallye in iconic Rothmans livery through modern day GT3 RS, brand new 911 Speedster and RUF Yellowbird to modern racecars like RS5 DTM, Formula E, Nascar car and the new GT2 RS based Porsche 935. Seeing all of these cars go sideways on a narrow ice track is definitely something you don’t see every day.
As the event is backed by Porsche family itself, some of the biggest companies close to Porsche attended, with RUF and Singer being some of them. Porsche related lifestyle brands and clubs like Luftgekühlt and Type 7 had their stands as well.
On top of the cars driving on the track, there were many special cars on display as well. The displayed track records breaking Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO and Volkswagen ID.R represented the current pinnacle of motorsport. The newest and fastest cars were complimented by the classic racecars like Porsche 935 and BMW M1 Procar. One of the main attractions was the Bentley Continental “Ice” GT which Bentley purposely built for the event. The W12 Continental was raised, packed with a tow, roof rack, light bars and finished in an icy blue livery looking like a proper rally special.
Besides the actual races, the schedule was packed with show rides of modern cars, Olympic skiers being towed by cars like 911 2.7 RS and rally cars hot laps with legends like Stiq Blomqvist and former Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust. The parking areas were packed by worthy cars like GT3 Tourings finished in PTS colors, brand new RS6s, Bentleys, vintage 911s and similar.
Overall, the amazing cars, uniqueness, openness and friendly atmosphere during the whole weekend made the event a really nice experience and a worthy go-to place during the winter car off-season.
