Ferrari 296 Speciale & Aperta: A new era in Maranello

While customer deliveries are still a few months away, Ferrari is deep into the final testing phase of its latest creations, the 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A (Aperta), across the roads and testing facilities around Maranello. Over recent months, both models have been seen wearing their official launch specifications, alongside several other configurations showcasing different color and trim combinations. Together, they reveal a fascinating contrast between classic Ferrari heritage and modern performance design.

The open-top 296 Speciale Aperta arrives dressed in Rosso Dino, a heritage color with a subtle orange tint that instantly evokes Ferrari’s golden era of racing. Paired with black wheels featuring a silver outer trim, the Aperta carries an unmistakably old-school charm, blending vintage aesthetic with cutting-edge hybrid engineering. It’s Ferrari tradition reimagined, a tribute to the past, but driven by tomorrow’s technology.

In contrast, the 296 Speciale coupe takes a modern, motorsport-inspired direction. Its Verde Nürburgring finish is complemented by two white racing stripes running across the body, carbon-fiber wheels, silver brake calipers, and painted Scuderia shields. With numerous carbon-fiber details, this configuration gives it a bold and modern character.

More power, sharper dynamics

Both versions share a significant technical upgrade. Ferrari’s engineers have extracted an extra 50 PS from the hybrid system, bringing total output to 880 PS. Of that, 37 PS comes from the combustion engine alone, which now delivers 700 PS and 755 Nm. This gain is thanks to titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons, and a lighter crankshaft.

New engine management software, revised turbochargers, and a tighter calibration push the powerplant to even greater efficiency. The result is a sharper throttle response and a more explosive performance curve across the rev range.

Aerodynamics: More downforce, less drag

Ferrari didn’t stop at power. The aerodynamics have been completely reworked, starting with a new front bumper featuring larger cooling intakes, revised air channels beside the headlights, and a flow-through front hood Ferrari calls Aero Dampers.

At the rear, new vertical fins, L-shaped side vanes, and an active rear spoiler work in synergy to boost downforce. A new actuator control system now manages transitions between “Low Drag” (LD) and “High Downforce” (HD) 50 percent faster, and introduces a new “Medium Downforce” (MD) setting for improved stability at high speed.

The underbody and rear diffuser have been redesigned, while the Aperta gains a new engine cover for optimized airflow. Altogether, downforce has reportedly increased by up to 20 percent compared to previous models.

Weight reduction and chassis improvements

Ferrari’s relentless pursuit of performance continues with extensive weight reduction measures. Titanium plays a major role again, from engine components to bolts and suspension springs, while the exhaust system and various body panels are now made from carbon fiber. The result: a 60 kg reduction for the coupe and 50 kg for the Aperta. The chassis sits 5 mm lower, supported by recalibrated suspension software that reduces body roll by 13 percent. New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires have been developed specifically to translate this precision to the tarmac.

Inside the cockpit

The interior mirrors the car’s lightweight philosophy. The 296 Speciale and Aperta cabins feature increased use of carbon fiber and Alcantara, with simplified component structures. Even the door handles are now integrated directly into the panels to save weight and enhance the minimalist race-bred aesthetic.

A new chapter for Ferrari’s hybrid legacy

Whether it’s the Rosso Dino heritage of the Aperta or the Verde Nürburgring modernism of the coupe, both interpretations of the 296 Speciale series capture Ferrari’s dual identity, emotion and evolution. Classic or contemporary, each represents a different heartbeat of Maranello, united by one goal: purer performance.
