Geneva 2016: Porsche 718

Next to the Porsche 991 R, Porsche brings some more news to Geneva. The 718 generation shows us that Porsche is looking forward and dares to take some steps. After twenty years it's time for a new road with this model. Engines need to be more efficient and it's a shame that we have to say goodbye to a few cylinders. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will be available with a compact 2.0 liter and 2.5 liter engine. Porsche says goodbye to the six-cylinder engines and the Boxster and Cayman will now be powered by turbo engines.

It all has to do with marketing. For Porsche it's important to use the history of the brand during the introduction of new engines. With the name change to 718, Porsche refers to the very successful racing cars that were produced during 1953 and 1957. The 718 Boxster has new headlights, taillights and new bumpers.

The entry level 718 has a power of 300 hp and the S produces 350 hp. That's an increase of 35 hp for both versions compared with the six cylinder engines. With the increase of turbo pressure, the torque is also increased. The entry level model produces 380 Nm of torque instead of 280 Nm and the S produces 420 Nm instead of 360 Nm. Quite an improvement! The 718 sprints from zero to 100 kph in 4.7 seconds and the top speed of 275 kph. The S does this in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 285 kph. We're wondering what the four-cylinder boxer engine will sound like!
