IAA 2013: BMW i8 is ready for production

The BMW i8 is a herald of what the future will bring regarding sports cars. Car manufacturers are heading in a new direction of more durable solutions. The first hybrid sports car of BMW is the i8 and this car is shown in Frankfurt and is ready for production.

The BMW i8 doesn’t differ that much of the concept which appeared on Autogespot more than two years ago. The only thing BMW did was making the car more safe and less strange looking, but it’s still outstanding. The concept had doors completely out of glass, BMW changed this by placing conventional doors. Also, the outstanding blue parts are mostly gone, something which is replaced by a nice white and black colour scheme.

Under the hood we find a three-cylinder engine which, together with a hybrid engine, produces almost 400 hp. The car is driven on all four wheels and the car has great specifications. In 4.4 seconds, you’ll reach 100 kph. A top speed of 250 kph is also possible. The hybrid engine, which drives the front wheels, produces 131 hp. The three-cylinder engine, with a capacity of 1.5 liters, produces 231 hp. Together they have a usage of 2.5 liters per 100 kilometer which is way better than most other current hybrids.

This is possible thanks to five different driving modes. In the most efficient mode, the top speed is limited to 120 kph but you can drive 35 kilometers completely electric. When the battery is empty, recharging takes about three hours, so on one day, you can drive quite a lot electrical kilometers.

We don’t know what this car will cost but we expect that the price will be above 100.000 Euros. We can expect a lot of copies on the street, because a lot of BMW fanatics are waiting for this special model!
