The F40 is equipped with a 2.9-liter V8 engine that generates a power of 478 horsepower (352 kW) at 7,000 RPM and a maximum torque of 577 Nm at 4,000 RPM. The F40 was one of the fastest production cars of its time. It could reach a top speed of over 320 km/h and was the first street-legal Ferrari to break that mark. The F40 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 4.1 seconds. Although this acceleration is not as impressive by today's standards, it was exceptionally fast at that time. To save weight and maximize performance, the F40 was built with a carbon fiber and aluminum body. As a result, it weighed only about 1,100 kg, which is extremely light for a supercar. The F40 was designed by Pininfarina and was characterized by its aggressive and aerodynamic design. The distinctive grille opening, large air intakes, and huge rear wing contributed to improved cooling and high-speed downforce. Only a total of 1,311 Ferrari F40s were produced, making it a coveted collector's item.
The F40 was developed to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary and was the last vehicle personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. He passed away shortly after the presentation of the F40. Although the F40 was a road car, it had a strong connection to racing. It was based on the Ferrari 288 GTO, which was developed as a homologation model for motorsport.
