Lamborghini Silhouette P300: The forgotten bull that still roams

This isn’t your average Lamborghini sighting. What you’re looking at is a Lamborghini Silhouette P300, a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive rarity produced in limited numbers between 1976 and 1979. It made its debut at the 1976 Geneva Auto Show as a design experiment by the legendary Italian coachbuilder Bertone, based on the earlier Urraco model. The Silhouette was easily distinguishable thanks to its sharper, more angular styling, and it holds a special place in Lamborghini’s history as the first model from the marque to feature a targa top roof.

Power came from a 3.0-litre all-aluminium V8 engine, mounted transversely behind the driver. Despite its compact size and lightweight setup, the Silhouette delivered impressive performance: 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, 0 to 161 km/h in 16.1 seconds, and a top speed of 260 km/h. For a car from the mid-70s, those figures are nothing short of remarkable.

Only 54 Silhouettes were ever produced, 42 in left-hand drive and just 12 in right-hand drive. Today, just 31 examples are known to exist. That makes spotting one of these even rarer than catching a glimpse of modern low-volume Lamborghinis like the Centenario, Reventón, or Sián. Yet, unlike many of those garage queens, at least a few Silhouettes are still being driven, and spotted.

One such car recently resurfaced in Kingston Upon Thames, United Kingdom. This particular Silhouette was last seen in 2014 in London, where it wore a glossy red finish with silver revolver-style wheels. Since then, it has undergone a transformation. Today, it sports a striking orange-bronze paint job, and its iconic wheels have been refinished in gold. a classy and sophisticated upgrade that arguably suits the car far better than its previous look.

Fast forward to 2017, another red example emerged in Vught, Netherlands. Curiously, the same license plate seen on that Dutch Silhouette had been previously spotted in 2015 on a green Urraco P300, its predecessor. Then in 2018, another red Silhouette was seen twice in the Netherlands, once in Gorinchem and once in Leerdam.

In 2020, a blue Silhouette appeared in Frick, Switzerland, followed by a fascinating twist in 2021: the same Swiss license plate showed up on a red Countach 5000 S being transported on a trailer in Somaglia, Italy. Most recently, in 2025, we've seen another red Silhouette from Switzerland, this time in Oftringen.

With just 31 examples surviving worldwide, the Lamborghini Silhouette P300 is one of the rarest production cars to ever wear the raging bull badge. It may not have the aggressive design or cutting-edge tech of Lamborghini’s modern hypercars, but it carries a raw charm and historical significance that’s arguably even more special. And in a world where collectors hide their cars behind velvet ropes and climate-controlled garages, it’s refreshing to see someone still out there driving, and enjoying a piece of Lamborghini history that’s now nearly 50 years old.
