Nobody wants a Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is the most luxurious electric SUV you can get from Mercedes. It was initially presented back in April 2023 and has been available for purchase since January of this year. Yet, we’ve only seen a handful of private units appear on the site.

The top segment with electric drivetrains is facing challenges in 2024, and this combination isn't proving to be particularly advantageous. Generally, these types of models are struggling in the market. While the Porsche Taycan saw initial success, its sales have now significantly declined. The Rolls-Royce Spectre, though a great success, remains extremely exclusive. Maserati is experiencing difficulties, especially with its electric models. Even the newly launched electric Porsche Macan is having trouble gaining traction.

Market trends for a model like the EQS SUV do not look promising, and Mercedes is also feeling the pinch with its gasoline-powered models. Recently, it was revealed that production of the S-Class is being scaled down due to disappointing demand. This year, Mercedes delivered only 33,000 units of the S-Class, GLS, EQS, and EQS SUV combined, a figure that falls short of expectations, especially as the EQS is set to be phased out in favor of an all-electric S-Class. Additionally, many people find the design of the EQ models unappealing, which may also contribute to their lackluster sales.

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV has been available since January for around 215,000 euros. Relatively speaking, it's not that expensive compared to, for example, a gasoline-powered Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600. The EQS 680 SUV features a unique drivetrain not found in the regular EQS SUV. Its two electric motors deliver 658 hp and 950 Nm of torque. This power is crucial to keep this 3100 kilogram heavyweight moving swiftly with traffic. Despite its weight, it reaches 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The range is a reasonable 607 kilometers. In the back, you’ll find two separate seats for added comfort. Of course, it offers the best of the best that Mercedes-Maybach has to offer.

In this segment, customers generally prefer gasoline engines and a more conventional design language. This is evident when looking at the number of sightings of the facelifted Maybach GLS 600, which already has four pages of sightings on the site. In comparison, the EQS 680 SUV has only a handful of sightings, most of which are from Mercedes itself. So far, there was one American unit spotted in New York and a Night Series model in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA, followed by another Night Series seen in Lanaken, Belgium. The EQS 680 SUV has also been sighted in Stuttgart and Dresden, Germany, as well as in Pabianice, Poland. Additionally, one unit was spotted in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The most recent sighting was in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands.

We all expected this model to show up on the site frequently in no time, as is usually the case with luxury SUVs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Whether you like it or not, it’s certainly interesting due to its rarity!
