Not your average police car: Portugal’s BMW i8

Every now and then, a police car shows up that turns more heads than the average patrol cruiser. This time, it’s a BMW i8 spotted in Vila Real, Portugal, sporting the colors white, blue, and red of the Polícia. While this isn’t the first time we've seen the i8 in police livery, it's still a rare sight in Europe.

Of course, when it comes to exotic police fleets, Dubai takes the crown. Their force includes a staggering lineup of super- and hypercars - including a BMW i8 - making them world-famous for their high-octane approach to policing.

In Europe, however, things are a bit more reserved. Sure, we've seen glimpses of supercars in service - like in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. Back in the day, these countries outfitted their police with Porsche 356s and early 911s. But today, supercars in European police fleets are the exception, not the rule - and they’re rarely used in significant numbers.

Italy stands out, though. The Polizia famously ran a Lamborghini Gallardo for years before upgrading to Huracáns and even the Urus SUV. Interestingly, these Lambos often serve a very specific purpose: high-speed organ transport. Milan’s Polizia Locale even uses a confiscated Ferrari 458 Spider - definitely not something you see every day.

And Europe isn’t the only place getting creative. Just last year, in August, Turkish traffic police made headlines by putting a seized Bentley Continental GT to work. It’s not just a status symbol - it’s a statement.
