The Mercedes-Benz 500 K Special is now considered one of the most valuable Mercedes models ever produced, second only to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. Its immense value does not come from rarity alone, but also from the remarkable history surrounding it.
This ultra luxurious automobile was built between 1934 and 1936. At the time, it was widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated and prestigious convertibles in the world. Several high ranking Nazi officials are known to have used the car as an official vehicle, although the German dictator himself preferred armored chauffeur driven limousines and rarely drove on his own.
Even in its own era, the 500 K Special was among the most expensive cars money could buy. With a price tag of around 28,000 Reichsmarks, it would roughly equal a quarter of a million US dollars today. Fewer than 30 examples are believed to have been produced, making it an exclusive automobile reserved only for the very highest circles of society.
Today, values have risen to extraordinary levels. A Mercedes-Benz 500 K Special is now typically worth between 10 and 20 million dollars, with prices continuing to climb.
