What an interesting find from Marbella, Spain! Here we have the Rubau Cars 718 Speedster, which, as the name already suggests, is based on the Porsche 718 Boxster. At first sight this car really reminds us of the one-off concept Porsche 981 Boxster Bergspyder. That concept was revealed back in 2015 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 909 Bergspyder, one of Porsche’s lightest and most radical racing cars.
Unfortunately, the 981 Bergspyder never went into production. Which is a shame, because it would have fit in beautifully alongside the other extreme open-top machines of the modern era such as the McLaren Elva, Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss, Ferrari Monza SP2, or the Aston Martin V12 Speedster. Each of those cars represents that raw, uncompromising roadster spirit, and the Bergspyder would have been right at home in that exclusive company.
Now, a decade later, the company Rubau Cars has stepped in with their own take on the Bergspyder idea. Unlike Porsche’s 981-based concept, their version is based on the 718 generation Boxster. The similarities in spirit are clear, but it’s exciting to see an independent builder actually bring such a vision to life where Porsche themselves left it as just a concept.
At the moment, however, there are no specific details about how much this conversion will cost, how many units are planned, or if this will remain a one-off show car. That leaves us wondering if the Rubau Cars 718 Speedster end up following the same path as the 981 Bergspyder, admired but never sold? Or could it capture the interest of enthusiasts who are willing to invest in such a unique and exhilarating open-top driving experience?
