And then there are cars like The Beast, the Aurus Senat or the Hongqi L9, which were built for one very specific purpose: carrying world leaders around. While The Beast, the American presidential limousine, can occasionally be spotted in different countries across the Western world, the Senat and the L9 are much harder to come across outside their home countries. Here, we are seeing the Hongqi L9 for only the third time in China.

For seven days, my Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and a small white A-frame tent were my constant companions. Instead of travelling from hotel to hotel, I created my own little home away from home on the Gotthard Pass. From there, I explored the mountains on foot, drove historic alpine roads in the Rolls-Royce and regularly headed down to Andermatt to stock up on supplies.
